“Farewell, Isabella” was the first composition to be used under the name Laniakea; with the main musical ideas written by Ross prior to the formation of the band. This track’s particular writing style emphasizes the use of contrasting, yet complimentary ideas to allow for a dialogue between the two guitars. Much like the textures found in contrapuntal classical music, the melodies and rhythms weave in and out of each other with the aim of creating a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. The reverb drenched outro was not originally in the track, but our first live performances of this always ended with an improvised ambient soliloquy, thus making it natural to conclude with a similar section. “Isabella” was the name of the street that Mike and Ross resided on during the initial stages of their collaboration. Many fond memories were created there, making this track our tribute to good times and bygone days.
